Housed in the 15th-century villa of Paolo Guinigi, Lord of Lucca, this museum traces the city's history from its origins. Collections range from Villanovian artefacts (8th c. BC) to medieval sculptures by Jacopo della Quercia, and paintings by Fra Bartolomeo, Vasari and Pompeo Batoni.

Discovered in 2010 during renovations in the cellars of Palazzo Orsucci, this is the first archaeological site in Europe musealized and opened to the public with exclusively private funds. In a single space, 2,200 years of history overlap: Roman walls (1st c. BC), Lombard, medieval and Renaissance layers. Named after a terracotta frieze depicting putti riding dolphins. Every visit includes a guided tour (~40 min) and an 8-minute film about Lucca's origins.
